Welcome to Unpaid Spokeswomen, a column where we log what we’ve been into this week. Behind the wigs, makeup, costumes, and several layers of irony, we are two humans who genuinely enjoy doing things. Here is a weekly roundup of our unfiltered expert recommendations.
Trixie:
Colman Domingo
Tall, talented, sexy, stylish. I found out about Colman Domingo from the television show Fear The Walking Dead. I watch The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead usually once a year when I get sick or something and can’t go anywhere. Mr. Domingo plays Victor Strand, A strong self-sufficient tough guy with a homosexual flair. I am obsessed with him.
He has been on Broadway, been decorated with tons of different types of awards, and even taught at the University of Wisconsin Madison. I love him and the camera loves him and I pretty much think he should be president.
I believe he is also on Euphoria but I haven’t seen it because I can’t.
Painting Your Walls
I wish that it didn’t take purchasing a $1.9 million motel and renovating it on television for me to realize the transformative power of painting your walls. I think of all the shitty apartments I’ve ever had and all the difficult financial situations I’ve been in. And I think of how those times in my life were often fraught with dissatisfaction with my home environment. I didn’t have the money to change where I lived and I didn’t know where to begin.
I can’t even tell you what painting even just one wall in a room does. In a world where nobody young can afford to buy a home but everyone young wants somewhere cool to live, why aren’t more people painting?! You’re never going to get that security deposit back anyway because your ex-boyfriend smoked too much weed in your kitchen. Paint is so cheap and the process is surprisingly doable. You can pick a color, go to town, and then thrift from there! You can literally transform your entire living room for under $100. Then you can go look at this living room couch by ceramic tchotchkes and spray paint them in coordinating colors to create a color story.
I understand that maybe everyone else who is gay naturally knew these things. But until I started renovating a commercial space on a budget, I never knew how affordable the fundamental changes in interior design can be. I think the fear of messing up and/or making poor design choices scared me when I was younger. Don’t be like me. PAINT..
Katya:
Sheepies
If you are feeling decadent and would like to add a layer of comfort and coziness to your home, then you might want to try a sheepies by Burkelman. Made from upcycled Merino wool, they come in a variety of sizes and colors and they are fabulous. You can drape them across your bed or sofa. perhaps in front of a crackling fire so that you and your spouse can enjoy some nude reclining together. Too afraid of that cold bathroom floor in the morning? Throw down the Sheepies and say goodbye to cold. If you need to lay down but can’t find the right surface to do it on, then I have an idea: it’s this. Just the other evening I wanted to try something different so I pretended that I had a roommate to play a fun prank. I hid under the Sheepies and waited for him to come from work, so that I could jump up and scare the shit out of him and maybe give him a heart attack and take him to the hospital later. Well, duh, none of that happened but I did stay under there, pretty still, I’m kind of loud breather, for at least 20 minutes and it was nice. “They say if you want something different, you have to do something different.” —Jennifer Lopez, Marry Me (2022)
